Frequently Asked Questions

Bring lots of sunscreen as it can be expensive on the island or in Male.  Also, surf wax is hard to find and nearly $10 a bar so be sure to bring your own.  If you plan on walking out to Jails - a pair of reef boots is suggested.  An extra pair of fins and leash are suggested as well if you break or lose them.  If you plan on snorkeling it, bring your own gear as equipment can be hard to find.

There are 4 options to get to Jail Break Surf Inn (on Himmafushi).

1 - Public Ferry

The public ferry leaves every day, except Friday, from Male at 15:00 at Jetty #1.  It takes about 1 hour and costs 2 USD each way.

2 - Private Speed Boat

The speed boat takes 20 minutes from the airport and costs 100 USD for the boat (everyone on the boat can split the cost).  You can arrange the speed boat anytime upon arrival with up to 5 people including luggage.

3 – Private Dhoni (traditional Maldivian boat)

You can arrange a private Dhoni which will take about 1 hour from the airport and will cost 100 USD for the boat (everyone on the boat can split the cost). You can arrange the speed boat anytime upon arrival.

4 - Public Speed Boat

The public speed boat costs 10 USD each way and departs from Male in front of the Bank of Maldives main branch.  It leaves 3 times per day but you should request us to book it for you 1 day in advance because it can fill up and times are constantly changing.

*Note: On the PUBLIC ferry and PUBLIC speed boat nobody will be there to pick you up at the airport, but in a PRIVATE speed boat and PRIVATE dhoni our surf guide will be at the arrival gate to pick you up.

Upon arrival, you will get a regular tourist visa valid for 30 days. If you would like to stay longer with us, we can help you with the extension of your visa for up to 90 days total stay - but it has to be done BEFORE your arrival.

There is no ATM on the island but there are ATMs at the Male airport where you will arrive.  You can also take a half day trip to Male if you need to get to an ATM.

The ATMs will only issue local currency, Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), which unfortunately can't be changed back into US Dollar (USD) at any local or international bank. However, the shops on the island and in Male accept USD as well as local currency MVR.

The exchange rate for USD to MVR is 15.42 flat. The best option is to bring US Dollar (USD) in cash from where ever you are coming from or you can pay by credit card with a 4% extra charge.

The best time for Maldives surfing is from March until the end of October. The biggest waves are likely to occur in June, July and August. During this period, the wind is mainly offshore all day long. The Maldives is exposed to the same swells as Indonesia.

We have our own kitchen and can provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner depending on your booking situation.

You can book...

  • Bed and breakfast and take local food from the cafes around the island
  • Half board - includes breakfast and dinner
  • Full board - includes breakfast, lunch and dinner

We have a boat running to the surf breaks twice a day.

If you've bought a package with 1/2 boat trips you do not have to pay.  Otherwise, it's $10 per trip for Jailbreaks, Honky's or Sultans and $20 to Ninjas, Cokes or Chickens.

For each daily trip to Jails/Honkys/Sultans, the majority rules with all the guests voting for which break you surf that session.
